Photo Search
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) wants to be blown away by your distributed wind photos! Jump to details about the 2024 search, which is open for submissions during the month of May.
Wind turbines used as distributed energy resources—also called distributed wind—produce electricity that is consumed on-site or locally, as opposed to large, centralized wind farms that generate bulk electricity for distant end users. Each year, PNNL launches a search for the best distributed wind energy photos across the United States and its territories for PNNL's Distributed Wind Photo Gallery. The annual photo search aids PNNL’s efforts to highlight distributed wind technologies and the customers they serve. Here are some examples from previous searches:
The selected photos are used in multiple ways, including in PNNL and DOE reports, outreach efforts, webpages, presentations, newsletters, and other engagement opportunities, with attribution to the photographer.
The 2024 Search
During the month of May 2024, PNNL will be looking for the best distributed wind photos in each of five categories (below). The deadline to submit photos is May 31, and the winners will be announced on June 14. You'll find additional details below, or you can download instructions and eligibility information.

- Agriculture and distributed wind – photos that showcase distributed wind supporting agriculture (i.e., turbines with barns, crops, livestock).
- Commercial and industrial applications for distributed wind – photos of distributed wind at commercial establishments (i.e., turbines at small businesses, retail stores, etc.) or industrial facilities (i.e., turbines at manufacturing facilities, quarries, industrial parks, etc.).
- Residential distributed wind – photos capturing distributed wind installations at residential properties.
- American-made distributed wind – photos highlighting installed distributed wind turbines manufactured by American companies.
- Distributed wind glamour shots – distributed wind turbine(s) with striking natural backgrounds (i.e., blue skies, sunsets, meadows, rainbows, water, etc.).
