Steven Spurgeon Earns Award for Double Perovskite Research Poster

Steven Spurgeon
Steven Spurgeon received the top poster award at the 2017 Advances in Structural and Chemical Imaging Workshop.

Congratulations to Dr. Steven Spurgeon at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on earning a top poster award at the 2017 Advances in Structural and Chemical Imaging Workshop. Held at the University of Oregon as part of the PREMIER Network, the workshop gathers microscopy experts from across the Pacific Northwest to discuss results and techniques.

At the workshop's poster session, Spurgeon shared his team's investigations into a new type of material called a double perovskite. The team used scanning transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, and density functional theory calculations to determine how the material forms. The team's work shows how defects mediate the formation of the double perovskite, which has potential for use in next-generation data storage devices.

The workshop judges awarded him the top honor for his poster's novelty, technical content, and design. This is the second year that Spurgeon received the top poster award from this workshop.

Acknowledgments

Spurgeon's research is on a project led by Dr. Scott Chambers. In addition to Spurgeon and Chambers, the research team members are Dr. Peter Sushko, Dr. Yingge Du, Dr. Arun Devaraj, and Dr. Timothy Droubay, all from PNNL. The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.
