NST E-Learning
Learning in the virtual environment
PNNL engages interdisciplinary teams to develop interactive, scenario-based e-learning courses in which learners solve realistic and relevant problems. Our approach promotes performance-based learning that provides learners the opportunity to practice the same activities and decision-making processes that they would encounter in the real world. Several examples of PNNL's web-based training opportunities are highlighted below.
Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) Remote Monitoring System (RMS)
GTRI RMS Familiarization Training
This course provides several interactive scenarios to practice using the RMS software to assess various alarm and alert situations. Several alarm and alert scenarios and software simulations are presented to give learners realistic and relevant practice using the system. PNNL developed this e-learning course for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for users who need to learn how to use the RMS software and respond to RMS alarms and alerts.
GTRI RMS Radiation Safety Officer Training
This course gives learners practice in guiding RMS operators through various alarm and alert events. Radiation safety officers are given hands-on practice to familiarize themselves with RMS maintenance and testing procedures. Developed for NNSA, this e-learning course is designed for radiation safety officers and security directors who maintain and support one or more RMS units at their site.
GTRI RMS Local Law Enforcement Training
This course provides local law enforcement dispatchers and supervisors with realistic RMS alarm and alert event scenarios. Students practice using the RMS software to facilitate rapid response for each event. Developed for NNSA, this e-learning course is designed for local law enforcement dispatch center employees responsible for monitoring RMS units for organizations housing radiological sources that need protection.
GTRI RMS Off-site Monitoring Company Training
This course provides interactive scenarios to practice using the RMS software to assess various alarm and alert situations. Several alarm and alert scenarios and software simulations give learners realistic and relevant practice using the system. Developed for NNSA, this e-learning course is designed for off-site/third-party security monitoring company employees that provide primary or secondary monitoring for sites employing RMS units.
Introduction to SWARWeb, the Online Solid Waste Annual Reporting System
This course introduces learners to the most common features and functions of the Solid Waste Annual Reporting system. Through demonstration videos and interactive software simulations, learners practice performing critical tasks using the application. Designed course for the U.S. Army, this e-learning course is designed for all users of the U.S. Army Solid Waste Annual Reporting system.
Security Incident Inquiry Official Training
This course provides learners with real-life security incident scenarios to identify specific, underlying factors that contribute to human error in security incidents. The training uses a guided-discovery approach to give learners first-hand experience investigating incidents and making determinations about their root causes. Developed for DOE, and this e-learning course is designed for security incident inquiry officials.
Operational Security Training for Control Systems
This course provides control systems staff with an introduction to operations security and how it is applied within a control system environment. Students check their understanding of the concepts through interactive exercises in different control system environments. They learn how attackers use various physical security and social engineering techniques to access sensitive systems or information. Developed for the Department of Homeland Security Control Systems Security Program, this e-learning course is designed for control system engineers, operators, managers, and other staff interested in learning the basic concepts of operations security.
Cybersecurity Training for Control Systems Engineers and Operators
This awareness course offers control systems engineers and operators an introduction to various cybersecurity approaches they may use to reduce the risk of cyberattacks on their systems. Developed for the Department of Homeland Security Control Systems Security Program, this e-learning course is designed for control systems engineers and operators.
CAISI – E-Learning Application for U.S. Army Combat Service Support Automated Information Systems Interface
This course was developed for the Army's CAISI equipment, which provides wireless communications for various logistics systems to communicate across the battlefield. The training course conveys simpler concepts and advances to more complex maintenance and troubleshooting scenarios.
Building Re-tuning Training
PNNL developed two e-learning courses to teach building managers, engineers, operators, off-site contractors, and students how to assess building energy needs, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement low-cost changes to reduce overall energy consumption. Learners practice applying PNNL’s Building Re-tuning approach as they inspect multiple virtual buildings and make decisions about appropriate energy-saving solutions.
