Justin Teeguarden and Jordan Smith received the “Medical Device and Combination Product Specialty Section Best Published Paper Award” at the Society of Toxicology’s annual meeting. Teeguarden is a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Lab Fellow and the chief science officer for PNNL’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Division and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user program. Smith is a biomedical scientist in the Biological Sciences Division at PNNL. Their paper, published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, outlines the potential exposure of patients to bisphenol A (BPA) from composite dental materials.

Through this study, Teeguarden and Smith developed physiological-based pharmacokinetic modeling tools to calculate the fate of chemicals, like BPA, when they enter the body. In this study, they found that BPA exposure from dental products contributed negligible levels of BPA in blood compared to other sources. Not just limited to BPA, these computational tools they developed have greater use.

“We can use these tools to analyze the exposure risks of other chemicals, such as carcinogens and other toxic chemicals,” said Smith. “Ultimately, these models can help us develop better and more realistic assessments of chemical exposure risks,” said Teeguarden.
