Net Zero World Initiative to Accelerate Global Clean Energy

The Net Zero World Initiative brings together expertise from DOE national laboratories, federal agencies, and partner countries and leadership from the business community, the philanthropic community, civil society, and international institutions to usher in clean energy transformations and put global net zero within reach.

RICHLAND, Wash.—As announced by President Joe Biden at COP26 in Glasgow, the Department of Energy is leading an initiative to accelerate global energy system decarbonization. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry launched the Net Zero World Initiative together today with U.S. philanthropic leaders and international ministers.

Through the Net Zero World Initiative, expertise from DOE national laboratories, federal agencies, and partner countries and leadership from the business community, the philanthropic community, civil society, and international institutions will be harnessed to usher in clean energy transformations and put global net zero within reach.

Six DOE national laboratories currently play a role in the initiative. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will aid in advancing decarbonization by providing expertise in environmental impact analysis and applied energy technologies, and in-country capacity building with our international partners.

“PNNL is eager to collaborate with our international partners in decarbonizing their economies,” said PNNL Director Steven Ashby. He noted that the Laboratory will share, “capabilities in climate change impact assessment, smart building technologies, energy storage solutions, and decades of experience in international technology deployments.”
