As one of the most diverse joint appointment programs among U.S. national laboratories, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has partnerships with over 60 universities and research institutions. Through joint appointments, PNNL expands the research productivity and scientific impact of both PNNL and the university partners, broadening the base of expertise at each institution and helping build interdisciplinary teams to tackle tough science and technology challenges. 

“Inbound joint appointees strengthen capabilities at PNNL to address the Laboratory’s scientific missions, and our outbound appointees enable our university partners to address their educational and research needs,” explained PNNL director of research partnerships, Suresh Baskaran.   

Joint appointments that have been announced between December 2022 and February 2023 include: 

  • Michael Westphal, Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy 

  • Matthew Binsted, Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy 

  • Zarrar Khan, Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy 

  • Ou Yang, Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy 

  • Krishna Rajan, Energy and Environment Directorate, inbound appointee from the University of Buffalo, Department of Materials Design and Innovation 

  • Andreas Vasdekis, Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, inbound appointee with the University of Idaho, Department of Physics 

  • Francesca Pierobon, Energy and Environment Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Washington, School of Environment and Forest Sciences 

  • Tony Chiang, National Security Directorate, outbound appointee with the University of Texas at El Paso, Department of Biological Sciences 

  • Panos Stinis, Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate, outbound appointee with Brown University, Division of Applied Mathematics 

  • Laura Pence, National Security Directorate, inbound appointee from the University of Hartford, College of Arts & Sciences 

The 200+ PNNL joint appointments represent most of PNNL’s distinctive scientific capabilities in chemical and materials sciences, biological and Earth sciences, computational and mathematical sciences, and engineering.
