Science and Technology Advisor
Science and Technology Advisor

Biography

Jonathan Forman is a science and technology advisor in the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Global Science, Technology, and Policy group within the Emerging Threats and Technology Division. His professional experience spans the provision of scientific advice for international biological/chemical disarmament and nonproliferation policymakers, and serving as a product development technical lead in early phase startup companies.

From March 2013 to January 2020, Forman was the first person to hold the post of Science Policy Adviser at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), where he also facilitated the work of OPCW’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) to provide science advice to OPCW’s Director-General and staff. During his tenure at the OPCW, Forman coordinated the SAB’s scientific review from the Third to the Fourth Review Conferences of the Chemical Weapons Convention and brought significant attention to the scientific issues that underpin the key areas of implementation, including chemical forensics and investigative science. He also launched a “Science for Diplomats” initiative to strengthen scientific literacy for chemical disarmament policy makers and received an OPCW Hall of Fame Award for innovation.

Prior to 2013, Forman worked for a series of biotechnology companies, developing molecular diagnostic and bioanalytical assay technologies for genomic, immunoassay, and cell capture applications, and eventually becoming an independent consultant for process and product development of chip-based assay platforms.
