Researcher cited by society that fosters sustainable built environment

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has selected Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL’s) Michael Tillou to receive the organization’s Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented at ASHRAE’s 2021 Virtual Annual Conference on June 29.
The honor recognizes members who have served ASHRAE faithfully and with distinction on committees or have otherwise freely contributed their time and talent on behalf of the society. Tillou was nominated for the honor by an ASHRAE fellow and evaluated in categories including leadership, project and technical committee service, and ASHRAE-related publications and presentations.
“It’s wonderful to be recognized,” Tillou says. “I started my association with ASHRAE as a college student and have been actively involved for the past 17 years, mainly supporting the continuing development of ASHRAE Standard 90.1.” That standard provides the minimum requirements for energy-efficient design of most buildings and has been applied in the United States and internationally for decades.
Tillou joined PNNL in 2020 as a senior buildings research engineer, bringing more than 20 years of experience as an energy analyst. He supports PNNL’s commercial energy code development program, contributing technical analysis and support for cost-effective upgrades to national model energy codes and standards. This work includes ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
“We’re lucky to have Mike as part of our team at PNNL and this award just demonstrates how widely his work is appreciated in the larger building science community,” says Amanda Smith, who serves as Tillou’s manager in the PNNL Energy and Environment Directorate’s Simulation I team. “He truly cares about affecting building energy codes in a way that makes things better and he enjoys working collaboratively with others.”
ASHRAE is an international society with more than 50,000 members that seeks to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. ASHRAE’s efforts focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainability within the industry.
