Jean Scholtz, chief scientist of PNNL’s Visual Analytics group, was recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer–Human Interaction, known as SIGCHI, with the CHI Academy Award. The award is presented annually to principal leaders of the field whose efforts have shaped the disciplines and innovation of human-computer interaction (HCI). In 2015, Scholtz was presented with the SIGCHI Lifetime Service award.

Scholtz focuses on developing methodologies and metrics for user-centered evaluation in projects, such as the Visual Analytics Science and Technology Challenge, Metrics for Visual Analytics, and Situation Awareness for the Power Grid. She recently authored the book User-Centered Evaluation of Visual Analytics, published in October 2017 by Morgan Claypool.

Prior to PNNL, Scholtz worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where she conducted research about human-robot interaction and user-centered evaluation methodologies for usability. She started the IUSR (Industry Usability Report) project that developed a standard report format for reporting usability test, CIF (Common Industry Format), that became an ISO standard. Scholtz also worked at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for three years, where she managed projects in invisible computing, information retrieval, collaboration, and started a project involving human-robot interaction.

SIGCHI, the premiere society in human-technology and HCI, is one of ACM’s special interest groups.
