Department of the Army Weapon Systems HCI Style Guide Background

There have been a number of style guides, design guidelines documents, and standards published by DOD that address the design of the human-computer interface (HCI). These include the DOD HCI Style Guide and the UIS for the DII. Most of these previously developed design guidelines and style guides focus on design considerations that are more appropriate for command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I). Real time and near-real time (RT/NRT) systems, such as those that comprise the Army weapon system domain, have unique HCI design requirements that are not addressed by the C4I-focused requirements.
Real time and near-real time (RT/NRT) systems, such as those that comprise the Army weapon system domain, have unique HCI design requirements that are not addressed by the C4I-focused requirements.
The U. S. Army Office of the Director of Information Systems for Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (DISC4) recognized the need for better HCI design guidance for those systems that comprise the Army Weapon System domain. In 1996, DISC4 initiated an effort to develop a human-computer interface (HCI) style guide for weapons systems. This document was published in 1996 as the U. S. Army Weapon System HCI Style Guide (WSHCI), Version 1. In 1997, the WSHCI was revised and Version 2 published. The WSHCI was revised again in 1999. Version 3 is now available from the Download page of this website.
The WSHCI addresses those design requirements that are consistent across two or more of the subdomains that are included in the Army Weapon System Domain. These subdomains are defined in the JTA-A and include the following:
- Aviation Systems
- Ground Vehicle Systems
- Missile Systems
- Soldier Systems
- Munition Systems.
Each of these subdomains is in the process of developing their subdomain unique style guide that will complement and extend the guidance included in the WSHCI.
