Andy Mangan, Executive Director
U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development
Andrew Mangan is co-founder and executive director of the United States Business Council for Sustainable Development (US BCSD), a non-profit association of businesses launched in 2002 whose purpose is to create and deliver value-driven sustainable development projects in the United States. Projects are member-led and designed to create value through economic returns and environmental and social benefits.
US BCSD is a partner organization of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (World BCSD), a global network of 180 international companies with members drawn from 30 countries and 20 major industrial sectors. The World BCSD plays a leading role in shaping the global business response to the challenges of sustainable development. The US BCSD plays a complementary role by implementing projects in the United States that apply sustainable development principles to real world problems.
Andy defined the by-product synergy process in the mid-1990s, with colleagues from the United States and Mexico. He has continued to evolve and refine the process during the past ten years through US BCSD projects and as president of Applied Sustainability LLC, an award-winning industrial ecology services firm. By-product synergy is a multi-industry facilitation process aimed at turning one company's waste, or by-product, into a valuable resource for another company. The process has led to numerous additional cross-company synergies involving water, energy, land use and research. Prior to his work with the US BCSD, he served as deputy commissioner of the Texas General Land Office and as a congressional correspondent for the Associated Press.
Andy holds a masters degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he attended the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs as an International Fellow. He currently is a member of the Education Committee for the International Society of Industrial Ecology and a member of the Advisory Committee for the Environmental Science Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.
