Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Materials Sciences group of the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate. Steven is currently studying the fascinating electronic and magnetic properties of double perovskite thin film oxides. Working with Dr. Scott Chambers, Steven employs the techniques of scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy to study the atomic-scale structure and chemistry of oxide interfaces. This understanding is needed to design the next generation of "spintronic" memories and energy harvesting materials.

Prior to joining PNNL, Steven completed his doctoral studies at Drexel University. There he developed a framework to understand magnetoelectric coupling in oxide heterostructures, correlating atomically-resolved electron microscopy with local magnetic information from neutron scattering.
