Biography
Dr. Jian Zhi Hu is a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he recently joined the advisory committee for the Transformational Materials Science Initiative. Dr. Hu joined PNNL in 2000. Prior to then, Dr. Hu was an assistant research professor at University of Utah’s Department of Chemistry from 2000 to 2001; a green chemistry program fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1998 to 2000; and a research professor and associate at several scientific institutions.
Dr. Hu has 24 years’ research experience in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dr. Hu has developed many techniques, including:
- Slow and ultra-slow magic angle spinning (also known as magic angle turning, or MAT) techniques with a sample spinning rate of 1 to 100Hz for material characterization in solid-state NMR by accurately measuring the chemical-shift tensors of spin-1/2 nuclei in systems with complex molecular structures
- Techniques for in situ characterization of heterogeneous catalyst materials and reaction mechanisms
- High-resolution proton NMR metabolic profiling in vitro in human body fluids, ex vivo in excised intact tissues/organs, and in vivo in live animals
- High-resolution and -sensitivity proton metabolite NMR spectrum on samples with very limited masses and volumes.
Dr. Hu is an author and co-author of nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications. He holds four U.S. patents and has three pending patents. Additionally, he regularly attends scientific conferences and presents research-related material.
Research Interests
- Understanding the molecular mechanisms in hydrogen storage materials and lithium-ion batteries using NMR spectroscopy
- Ab initio calculations to predict molecular geometry and the principal values of chemical shift tensors (using quantum chemistry theory)
- NMR sensitivity enhancement using dynamic nuclear polarization, NMR data processing, NMR pulse sequence design, programming, testing, and NMR probe design and construction.
