Biography
Dr. Bill Weber is an internationally recognized leader and expert on radiation effects, ion-solid interactions, and defects and defect processes in ceramics. His research focuses on the fundamental aspects of ion-solid interactions in ceramics and glasses, computer simulations of defects and radiation damage processes, ion-beam modification of materials, ionic and gas transport in ceramics, the radiation stability of nuclear waste materials, and performance of materials in high-radiation environments.
Dr. Weber's research emphasizes understanding and modeling the irradiation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transformation in ceramics; the development and application of computational methods in studies of defects, defect properties, radiation effects, and phase transformations in ceramics; the formation of nanoscale structures by ion-implantation, the electronic stopping power in ceramics, and predictive modeling of radiation effects in nuclear waste materials. Dr. Weber's work has made significant contribution toward understanding the kinetics of radiation-induced amorphization in ceramics and predicting the long-term effects of radiation on nuclear waste materials. He currently leads a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research team in the area of defects and ion-solid interactions in ceramics.
Dr. Weber serves as chair of the PNNL Council of Fellows, chair of the PNNL Publication Advisory Committee, and previously served on the Advisory Committee for the Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory (1996-2000). He has organized numerous international conferences, society symposia, and U.S. Department of Energy workshops.
