Science Leadership

A message from Allison Campbell and Louis J. Terminello, Associate Laboratory Directors for PNNL's Science mission.

Welcome to PNNL's Science Mission. Here, you can learn about the high-impact projects and initiatives our researchers lead for our federal agency sponsors, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, and the National Institutes of Health. Our work falls into the categories of Earth and Biological Sciences (EBSD) and Physical and Computational Sciences (PCSD), with world-leading capabilities, world-class science, and team-based approaches recognized as our strengths and hallmarks.

Working with our federal sponsors, we focus on unique, creative, and bold research to make our world cleaner, healthier, and safer.

Our remarkable leadership and staff expertise, modern facilities, advanced equipment, and unique instrumentation combine to form a best-in-class technical foundation; these assets underpin our status as a recognized leader in atmospheric science, Earth system science, environmental subsurface science, biological systems science, experimental and theoretical chemistry, chemical physics, catalysis, geochemistry, and high-performance computing.

PNNL's Science Mission is realized in part by our stewardship of two unique scientific user facilities, ARM and EMSL, and specialized laboratories such as the Atmospheric Measurement Laboratory, and Microbial Cell Dynamic Laboratory. We lead two multi-institutional DOE Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs): the Center for Molecular Electrocatalysis (CME) which studies how to improve reactions important for solar energy storage and fuel cells, and the Interfacial Dynamics in Radioactive Environments and Materials Center (IDREAM) which is focused on driving innovation in the treatment of the nation’s radioactive waste. Our Institute for Integrated Catalysis (IIC) facilitates collaborative research and development in catalysts for a secure energy future. We have dynamic research partnerships with the University of Washington in the Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing (NIAC) and an emerging Northwest Institute for Advanced Materials (NIAM).

We invite you to read our Lab Agenda to learn more about PNNL's Science Mission, science and technology objectives, our core capabilities, and the importance of the bold and unique science we are completing for and with our sponsors and partners. PNNL is known for its excellence in science and technology; as leaders of its Science Mission, we are committed to maintaining that standard of excellence for every effort managed by EBSD and PCSD.
