Researchers Explore HPC Alternatives for Power Grid Operations
Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory believe that traditional power grid computation can be reformulated and converted to high-performance computing platforms. In the April issue of Scientific Computing, Jarek Nieplocha, Zhenyu Huang, Ross Guttromson, and Rob Pratt share their thoughts on the future use of HPC to solve challenges related to the energy grid. Aside from outlining three HPC steps for a real-time platform to estimate and simulate the grid, the team describes current research being conducted in the Electricity Infrastructure Operations Center (EIOC) at PNNL.
