Computational Sciences Facility getting ready to log on
Construction activities will begin in early June 2008 for the new Computational Sciences Facility.

Soil samples were taken at the site of the new Computational Sciences Facility and Biological Sciences Facility in April to provide information used for building design.
The bid process for site work, foundation and steel procurement is currently underway for the CSF, following ground sampling for geotechnical information about the soil. "These samples provide the necessary information for the design team to complete the foundations design for the buildings," said Greg Herman, project manager. "We expect Harvey Builders (the general contractor for the construction) to break ground as early as June."
The 75,600-square-foot CSF, a privately-funded building, will host information analytics capabilities, computer laboratories, and electronic and instrumentation labs. The CSF and the Biological Sciences Facility, or BSF, will provide much needed space to accommodate PNNL's transition from the 300 Area to make way for the environmental cleanup of the Hanford Site.
To be completed in late 2009, the CSF will house about 180 staff from the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate (FCSD) and the National Security Directorate as well as the following capabilities: high-performance computing, cyber security, information analytics and computational biology research.
The CSF, upper right, and the BSF, are attached by a common main entry. The facilities will be located west of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.
"The CSF provides us with an exciting opportunity to strengthen our computational capabilities through collaborative research across both directorates," said Deborah Gracio, division director for NSD Computational and Statistical Analytics.
According to Moe Khaleel, director of FCSD's Computational Science and Mathematics, the 10,000-square-feet of raised floor space provided by the new facility will enable researchers to explore next-generation, high-performance computing architectures. "We now will be able to go after new programs, expanding our opportunities," Moe said.
Cowperwood Company, a development and asset management firm headquartered in New York City, is financing the CSF and BSF facilities and will hold the leases. The Seattle office of San Francisco-based KMD Architects designed the buildings, and Houston's D.E. Harvey Builders is leading construction.
Biological Sciences Facility to break ground in June

The earth could be moving at the site of new Biological Sciences Facility as early as June 2008.
The 73,100-square-foot Biological Sciences Facility, or BSF, will be a privately-funded facility that Battelle, operator of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, will lease. The BSF, together with the Computational Sciences Facility, or CSF, will provide much needed space to accommodate PNNL's transition from the 300 Area to make way for the environmental cleanup of the Hanford Site.
The new BSF building is intended to house 130 staff and biological laboratories with capabilities in environmental microbiology, stress and adaptive signaling, and systems biology—all focused on achieving a predictive understanding of multi-cellular biological systems.
"We are looking forward to moving staff into the Biological Sciences Facility and being closer to the main campus as we work with interdisciplinary teams of staff housed in EMSL as well as computational scientists on the main PNNL campus," said Harvey Bolton, who manages the biological sciences research division. "We expect that collaborative research, including experimentation and modeling, will grow in the years to come and the BSF-CSF co-location will allow us to further enhance our scientific impact."
The bid process for site work, foundation and steel procurement is currently underway for the BSF, following ground sampling for geotechnical information about the soil. "These samples have assisted the design team in designing the foundations of the buildings," said Greg Herman, project manager. "We expect Harvey Builders (the general contractor for the construction) to break ground as early as June."
