Public Expectations and Corporate Strategy

Abstract

One potentially useful source for tracking public opinion is outside ratings of corporate environmental performance. External rating systems of corporate performance represent an important perspective on public interests and priorities. Although these systems serve different constituencies, they also provide an important avenue of information for the public on the environmental performance of companies. What follows is a comparison of three different evaluation systems of corporate environmental performance and a public interest group strategic framework for performance (the principles of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsibly Economies [CERES]). This will help us gain a perspective of the expectations that some groups have for corporations in the area of the environment.
