Native Renewables, Inc. Analysis of Small-scale Storage Options: Technical Memorandum

Abstract

The Energy Storage for Social Equity (ES4SE) Initiative, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity Energy Storage Program, is a program by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Sandia National Laboratories. ES4SE is designed to empower urban, rural, and tribal disadvantaged communities to consider energy storage technologies and applications as a viable path towards community prosperity, well-being, and resilience. This memo report address capital cost, O&M and levelized cost of storage for battery storage to back up solar generation for the Navajo and Hopi nations in Arizona. Procurement will be done by Native Renewables Inc. (NRI), a company that helps Navajo families that don’t have access to the grid. For each household, usually, there would be a 2.5 kW PV + 12-19 kWh storage system.
