Investigation of Reactive Intermediates During the Synthesis of Di-n-butylmagnesium

Abstract

Alkylmagnesium compounds and their reactions have been thoroughly studied over the past hundred years. Dialkylmagnesium compounds have drawn considerable interest in recent years due to their role in commercial polymerization reactions. Herein, we report for the first time the powder x-ray diffraction patterns of 1,4-dioxane coordinated di-n-butylmagnesium and solvent free di-n-butylmagnesium that have been synthesized from MgCl2 and n-butyllithium. The powder diffraction data was also used to elucidate structural information for 1,4-dioxane coordinated di-n-butylmagnesium and solvent free di-n-butylmagnesium.
