Sequim Bay Underwater Demonstration Site
The Challenge
Numerous underwater sites have been identified by the Department of Defense (DoD) in relatively shallow water that are potentially contaminated with munitions, posing a threat to human health and the environment. To help address this challenge, PNNL-Sequim operates a demonstration area in Sequim Bay with targets and clutter placed to enable the evaluation of technologies for detection and classification of munitions underwater.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) staff provide permit authorizations, geolocation information of target positions for technology comparisons, target preparation, emplacement, ground-truthing, target recovery, and site-relevant environmental data for the Sequim Bay Underwater Demonstration Site. PNNL also supplies logistical support for visiting technology demonstrators and other visiting investigators working at the site. This work is funded by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) underwater Munitions Response (MR) program.
