The meeting commenced at 2:30 p.m.
Health and Safety Expo
The Expo was successful, with 17, 466 attendees! John Reck attended the close-out meeting and reported the following issues:
John will be PNNL's representative on the Expo Committee next year.
Review of Region X
Vern Madson handed out a synopsis of the breakout sessions from Region X that was developed by staff from other contractors who attended.
Nancy Isern, who attended, was particularly impressed with one breakout session that discussed electronic tracking tool systems used by Potlatch and Alcoa. This type of tool would allow a staff member to electronically input a concern. The concern then would automatically be forwarded to the manager who had responsibility for the area of concern, and they would have a certain amount of time to address/correct the concern. The staff member who raised the concern could access the system at any time to view the status of their concern. Mary Ann Showalter, who also attended, agreed that the system seemed to be a combination of the Laboratory's Assessment Tracking System and Let's Talk Database.
Action: The Committee will be looking into implementing an electronic tracking system where staff can enter their concerns. The Committee will be presenting this idea to Roby Enge, ES&H Director.
VPP Pamphlet/Award Distribution
The electronic survey has been sent to all staff, and the Committee has developed a schedule for distributing the awards. On June 20 and 21, Steering Committee members will be staffed in designated points at each building to hand out the awards. Larry Maples will coordinate distribution points in each building.
VPP Onsite Evaluation Training Class
Todd Hart and Vern attended a DOE site meeting. It was determined that PNNL is scheduled for its onsite review in September or later. On June 14 through 16, an onsite evaluation training class is taking place at HAMMER, and six or so people are needed from each contractor to attend and be trained to perform these evaluations.
Vern, Russ Meicenheimer and Rich Garretson will be attending for the bargaining unit side. Drue Collins, Pat Wright, and Todd will be attending for the non-bargaining unit side.
In order to make it easier on the evaluators, these individuals would perform no more than one inspection per year (each inspection is a 3-week commitment).
Electronic VPP Application
Vern and Mary Ann met with Jim McIntyre, IT, about getting access inside the PNNL firewall for the 10 DOE-HQ staff who will review our application. Jim suggested SmartCard access for these individuals, but also suggested that we talk with JD Fluckiger, Computer Security, to further discuss the issue. Vern and Mary Ann have an appointment set up with JD to discuss.
Two sections of the application are ready to go.
National Convention
Vern mentioned that the VPP National Convention will be held August 28 through 30, 2000, in Seattle. He asked the Committee members to let him know if they are interested in attending.
The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
