Earth Scientist, Team Leader
Earth Scientist, Team Leader

Biography

Nicholas (Nick) Ward joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 2016 as an Earth scientist, then became the team leader of the Environmental Biogeochemistry team in the Coastal Sciences Division in 2021. Within this role, Ward studies how terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems function and interact across the continuum of land, inland waters, the ocean, and the atmosphere. He primarily focuses on carbon as a currency that gets exchanged across this continuum and seeks to understand how water flow, plants’ productivity, and cycling of nutrients and redox-sensitive species collectively mediate these carbon exchanges.

Ward’s research aims to establish a baseline understanding of how ecosystems function naturally to predict the influence of disturbances and human activities on hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes. Likewise, he studies how human interventions can improve the ability of natural ecosystems to mitigate climate change. For more information about his research, visit the Ward Ecosystems Research website.
