Biography

Dr. Kitt Bagwell is a molecular microbial ecologist and physiologist. His research interests span understanding fundamental organization and coordination of complex microbial processes at scale and the application of this knowledge for predictive control of microbiological processes at the energy-environment nexus.

Bagwell has 20 years of experience in the Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory system, including two years as a postdoc at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in microbial and environmental genomics, 15 as a staff scientist focused on environmental microbiology and biogeochemistry at Savannah River National Laboratory broadly in, and he has served as a senior scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory since 2017.

As a DOE staff scientist, Bagwell continues to lead an active research program in microbial ecology physiology and environmental biogeochemistry for environmental remediation, resource recovery, waste to energy conversion, plant-microbe interactions and greenhouse gas mitigation. Bagwell has served as a lead- and co-principal investigator on numerous multi-disciplinary research teams with DOE national laboratory partners, other federal agency laboratories, and academic collaborators with program funding from DOE Offices of Science, Environmental Management, Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, as well as national security agencies.

Bagwell holds adjunct appointments at Clemson University in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences and the University of South Carolina in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Bagwell is an associate editor in microbiotechnology for Frontiers in Microbiology, as well as Microbiome and Environmental Microbiome. He’s served as an invited editor for special issues in Science of the Total Environment and Microorganisms.
