Senior Scientist, Biological Sciences Division

Biography

Dr. Kirsten Hofmockel is a Sr. Scientist in the Biological Sciences Division. Her research focuses on the influence of plant-microbe ecology on soil biogeochemistry to identify molecular reactions that inform the prediction of ecosystem responses to environmental change and probable feedbacks to ecosystem functions.

Hofmockel is principal investigator for the DOE-funded Soil Microbiome Science Focus Area project, leading a National Science Foundation-funded project to study carbon-nitrogen coupling in grasslands. She is also a DOE Early Career Award recipient for research focused on elucidating the molecular interactions of plants, soils, and microbes in growing bioenergy crops. In addition, Hofmockel is the president of the Soil Ecology Society, a member of the U.S. National Committee for Soil Sciences, and holds a joint appointment with the Iowa State University Department of Agronomy.
