Biography

Jeff Evans leads a team of software/data engineers and data scientists as the Software Engineering and Architectures Group Leader within the Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Division, National Security Directorate. His team has developed and deployed complex data pipelines, cloud environments, and artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) algorithms. As a project manager Jeff has over 20 years of experience leading complex technology projects in the federal sector. Jeff leads a diverse suite of work utilizing the full breadth of his skills ranging from international energy security, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, big data analytics, software development, and AI/ML, including operational AI. Much of his current work is focused on non-intrusive inspection technologies such as X-ray, CT, millimeter wave, and radiation detection. His U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) project portfolio spans multiple agencies inside DHS. In the last few years, Jeff’s projects have led to several first-of-their-kind deployments of automated threat recognition algorithms to be used operationally within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection environment.

Jeff came to the PNNL in 2010 after a career in the private sector where he focused on developing and deploying technology solutions in dynamic environments primarily supporting members of the intelligence community and the Department of Defense.
