The 2006 Northwest Symposium for Systems Biology will not be held this year. Please check back with us for details about the 2007 symposium. In the meantime, feel free to read about the speakers and topics of the 2005 symposium.
June 20 and 21 2005
EMSL Auditorium, PNNL campus
Richland, WA
The annual Northwest Symposium for Systems Biology Toward A Predictive Science was held on Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21, on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus in Richland, Washington. The symposium focused on the process of driving systems biology toward the ability to predict via three engaging sessions.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. David Galas, V.P., Chancellor, Chief Scientific Officer, Professor Keck Graduate Institute
V.P., Chief Scientific Officer for Biological and Life Sciences Battelle Memorial Institute.
Symposium Chair: Dr. Karin D.

- Session 1 - Generating the Data Needed for Prediction
- Session 2 - Generating Models that Predict
- Session 3 - Applications: Brave New World
The new approach to solving complex biological problems that has been named systems biology encompasses many different components. Some emphasize the computational, data-intensive aspects of systems biology, others emphasize the need for a truly multi-disciplinary, team-based approach to problem solving, while others emphasize the need to study multiple components of complex systems simultaneously to understand their relationships. Yet all these aspects of systems biology have one common thread: the desire to use these strategies to generate models of complex biological systems that predict the behavior of the system in response to perturbation. The ability to predict complex behaviors opens the possibility of modifying the outcome of a perturbation, whether it is disease or drug treatment, pollution, or global warming.
