Peurrung named director of PNNL’s National Security Directorate

RICHLAND, Washington –
Anthony J. Peurrung has been named associate laboratory director for the National Security Directorate at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Peurrung assumed his new position on June 1.
In his new role, Peurrung will be responsible for delivering and deploying impactful science and technology to the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, the intelligence community and others.
"I have great confidence in Tony's clear, compelling vision for NSD," said PNNL Director Mike Kluse. "He was a clear choice for this position." Kluse will look to Peurrung for maintaining the national leadership of PNNL in nuclear threat detection, securing the cyber infrastructure and in developing capabilities in chemical, biological and explosives detection.
More than 2,000 of PNNL's approximately 4,700 staff members have contributed to NSD activities during the past year. NSD's business volume is about $550 million annually.
Prior to his appointment, Peurrung served as director of NSD's Physical and Chemical Division. He also held leadership roles in both the DOE Radiation Detection Panel and the DHS Radiological and Nuclear Countermeasures Program. Peurrung holds three patents, has authored 45 publications and nearly two dozen Department of Energy reports. He joined NSD as a scientist in 1994.
He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University.
Peurrung replaces Barry Merrill, who retired this month.
