Instant exposure monitor

Workers who think they've been exposed to dangerous chemicals won't have to wait weeks to learn their fate.

The Exposure-to-Risk Monitoring System (ERMS) returns answers in minutes, by analyzing the compounds in their breath. A mass spectrometer measures amounts of toxic compounds, then uses a mathematical model to calculate the resulting health risk.

The device-developed at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash.-also could benefit people who don't work near hazardous materials. It also can detect compounds associated with lung cancer.
