Decoding Diseases

The world's most powerful nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer will soon be helping scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) analyze the chemistry of life.

Similar to the scanners used by physicians, the 900-MHz wide-bore PNNL machine can determine the three-dimensional structure of proteins associated with debilitating diseases. "It should help us deliver breakthrough science," says Lura Powell, director of the Richland, Wash., laboratory.
