Low-NOx Diesel

A joint government and industry effort aimed at making diesel engines burn cleaner has claimed a major milestone. In tests at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (pnl.gov) in Richland, Wash., a new catalyst developed in cooperation with Delphi Automotive Systems of Troy, Mich., achieved a 55 percent reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

The system also reduced particulates.

Project scientists say it should be possible to fine-tune the system to attain even higher levels of pollutant removal.
