Computer takes a byte out of crime
As every mystery fan knows, seemingly insignificant clues can crack a case. The Computer Aided Tracking and Characterization of Homicides (CATCH) program developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (pnl.gov) in Richland, Wash., is helping detectives narrow down suspects by identifying possible connections among the many crimes logged in the state attorney general's case file. It then displays its findings in an easy-to-read graphic.
"Pictures instantly convey information that the spoken or written word does not," says a lab spokesman.
