NEW CENTER LINKS TECHNOLOGY, AGRIBUSINESS
RICHLAND, Washington -- From the lab to the farm, the Agribusiness Commercialization and Development Center will be a "stepping stone" for area researchers who are interested in commercializing their agriculturally related technology. The center also will serve as a regional focal point for industry looking for new technology.
The center, which officially opens today, was established through the joint effort of the U.S. Department of Energy, TRIDEC, Battelle, Port of Benton and Washington State University Tri-Cities. It will be located in the Port of Benton office complex in Richland.
The center is a one-of-a-kind facility that will provide researchers from Battelle, Hanford, WSU and private industry with laboratory and high-bay facilities and processing equipment necessary for the development and demonstration of new agribusiness-related technologies. The goal is for researchers to use the facility to refine their technology and then move into area or local business incubators to market it.
Technology developed and commercialized at the center will help in solving the many challenges facing the regional agribusiness industry including waste management, pesticide residues, water conservation and food preservation.
Initial projects at the center that will be developed further and possibly commercialized include a process for the production of a biodegradable dust suppressant, a high-protein cattle feed supplement from potato processing waste, a WSU process for fractionating wheat into individual higher-valued components and a process for recovery/purification of food-grade starch from potatoes.
