PNNL training programs recognized as one of industry's best
Richland, Wash. — In recognition of its leadership in staff development and continued management and operations excellence, the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has received a 2004 Training Top 100 Award from Training magazine. In its first year as an applicant, PNNL placed 28th on the list of 100, having been selected from a field of more than 550 applicants. Additionally, PNNL’s management skills development program was one of only eight programs recognized as a best practice by Training.
Training magazine’s annual award honors 100 outstanding training programs from organizations in a variety of industries, ranging from manufacturing to insurance and banking to government. PNNL received the honor at a black-tie ceremony on Feb. 29 in Atlanta, GA at the Training 2004 Conference and Expo. Other Top 100 winners for 2004 include IBM, Pfizer and Sprint.
"We are extremely honored to be selected to receive this award from Training magazine," said Paula Linnen, vice president and director, PNNL human resources. "It acknowledges the investment we make in our people and it reinforces the high value we place on development and training. Our customers continue to benefit from the dedication and talent of the people involved in developing and delivering these programs so successfully."
Training magazine uses a multi-tiered nomination, application and interview process to select 100 elite international organizations. Companies submit a detailed application providing both quantitative and qualitative data. Training magazine's editorial staff evaluates the information provided and conducts follow-up interviews, where appropriate. Judging also includes reviews of formal programs, measurement methods of staff satisfaction with the organization's training programs and staff resources such as Web-based training and professional development.
PNNL's training programs have resulted in significant savings at the laboratory, including an estimated $5.6 million in recruiting, hiring and relocation costs in the last five years as a result of the lab’s management skills development program. The retention rate for managers who have participated in this program is 300 percent higher than the average retention rate. Today, 35 percent of PNNL's work groups are considered best in class by the Gallup organization.
