Two PNNL leaders take on new roles

RICHLAND, Wash. — J. W. (Bill) Rogers Jr. is assuming directorship of the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy scientific user facility at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. EMSL (http://www.emsl.pnl.gov) is dedicated to science and technology development aimed at solving environmental issues. Its molecular science capabilities also are focused on energy issues, homeland security and on developing new materials. Rogers will focus on maximizing the scientific impact of EMSL’s users programs.
Rogers joined PNNL in 1999 as associate director of the lab’s Interfacial Chemistry and Engineering technical resource group. In 2000, he was named associate laboratory director for PNNL’s Fundamental Science Directorate. Rogers came to PNNL from the University of Washington where he was a professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Prior to that, he worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., for 11 years.
The 200,000-square-foot EMSL houses up to 360 permanent staff, postdoctoral associates, visiting scientists and students. The research facility and its complement of advanced research equipment cost $230 million to build. The fiscal year 2002 operating and capital budget for the facility was $37 million.

Reinhold Mann has been named associate laboratory director for PNNL and will lead the lab's Fundamental Science Directorate. Mann most recently served as deputy director for science and technology at PNNL.
In addition to his new role with FSD, Mann will serve as PNNL’s chief research officer. In this position, he will assure that key scientific initiatives are integrated with PNNL’s other research activities.
Mann joined PNNL in 2001. He has more than 20 years experience as a researcher and leader in life, physical, computational and engineering sciences. He joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a visiting scientist in 1981 and, during the next two decades, built successful programs in robotics and intelligent systems, bioinformatics and computational biology at ORNL. In 1999, he received the ORNL Leader of the Year Award in recognition of his management skills.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a DOE research facility and delivers breakthrough science and technology in the areas of environment, energy, health, fundamental sciences and national security. Battelle, based in Columbus, Ohio, has operated the laboratory for DOE since 1965.
