RICHLAND, Wash.—Researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, operated by Battelle, and at OmniViz Inc., a Battelle subsidiary, have been recognized by R&D Magazine as developing one of the 100 most significant innovations of 2001.

The winning technology is a data mining and visualization software tool, called OmniViz™, commercialized by OmniViz Inc. (http://www.omniviz.com). The software can be used to analyze and graphically display large collections of numeric, categorical, genomic sequence and text data primarily for life and chemical science research.

The OmniViz™ visualization tool enables scientists and business professionals to integrate analyses across these multiple data types and across domains. "OmniViz™ can analyze large collections of experimental data and the associated literature, patents and competitive intelligence information in the same visual framework, providing a unique ability to discover, prioritize and test decisions or hypotheses," said Jeffrey Saffer, OmniViz chief technology officer. "This leads to increased productivity, decreased time to market, and reduced business risks."

OmniViz™ analyzes multiple complex data sets, freely mixing both numeric and text data, and displays the results in a variety of visual formats. Relationships and patterns are discerned without prior definition, allowing the data to "speak for itself." OmniViz™ represents a technological advancement in retrieving and analyzing information from large, disparate numerical databases and text collections, with an unprecedented breadth of coverage, speed and output options.

The software's distinguishing features include the ability to find and display relationships that were neither specified nor suspected by the user, the transparent mixture and linkage of various types and formats of input data, and an increased computational speed. OmniViz™ provides cross-platform compatibility—running as a workstation-based application under Solaris or Windows, with the ability to use a Solaris™, Windows or Linux-based processing server.

The R&D 100 Award competition is conducted annually by R&D Magazine to honor the most promising new products, processes, materials or software developed throughout the world. Awards are based on each achievement's technical significance, uniqueness and usefulness. PNNL researchers have received 59 R&D 100 Awards since 1969, including 52 since 1988.

PNNL and OmniViz will be recognized in October at R&D Magazine's 40th annual awards banquet held in Chicago, where the magazine is based.
