Rogers, Stokes named to new posts at PNNL

RICHLAND, Wash. — J.W. “Bill” Rogers Jr. has been named associate laboratory director for the Environmental & Health Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The division is the fundamental science arm for the lab. Rogers succeeds Gerry Stokes, who is assuming directorship of a newly formed joint institute on global climate change on the East Coast.
Rogers came to PNNL last year from the University of Washington, where he was a professor and chair of the university’s Department of Chemical Engineering. At PNNL, he has led the laboratory’s Nanoscience and Technology Initiative. Rogers also worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., for 11 years before moving to the university in 1991.
As associate laboratory director, Rogers oversees a staff of 500 and will manage the basic research component at PNNL. The division manages the Department of Energy’s William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a national scientific user facility, along with departments focused on molecular biosciences, chemical sciences and earth systems sciences.
“Bill’s leadership in the area of nanoscience and technology, coupled with his extensive experience in academia and his management skills, certainly will help PNNL strengthen its fundamental science programs. He has the vision and commitment to continue our efforts to build strong partnerships with regional universities,” said PNNL Director Lura Powell.

Stokes will move to the East Coast where he will lead a joint institute between PNNL and a major research university that is built around the lab’s Global Change Research Group, currently located in Washington, D.C. PNNL is one of the nation’s leaders in global climate research, conducting more than $30 million in related research each year.
“The joint institute will help PNNL fulfill its commitment as a national laboratory to meet the national need for high quality research in this very important field of study. Gerry has devoted much of his professional life to this area of science and I can think of no one better qualified to lead this new institute than him,” Powell said.
Stokes has a long career in climate related research, including six years as the head of the PNNL Global Studies program. He has served as an associate laboratory director at PNNL since 1995 and has led the Environmental & Health Sciences Division since 1997.
PNNL is one of DOE’s nine multiprogram national laboratories and conducts research in the fields of environment, energy, health sciences and national security. Battelle, based in Columbus, Ohio, has operated PNNL for DOE since 1965.
