Senner named to head communications at national laboratory

RICHLAND, Wash. - Susan J. Senner has been named deputy director of communications at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. As deputy director, Senner will oversee more than 100 staff engaged in staff and community relations, marketing communications, Media & External Communications, and technical and electronic communications.
Most recently, Senner was senior public relations specialist for DOE's International Nuclear Safety Program office in Richland. INSP is a comprehensive, cooperative effort to improve safety at more than 60 Soviet-designed reactors in nine eastern European countries. At INSP, Senner served as the primary interface with DOE headquarters staff on communications issues and activities. From 1987 to 1996, Senner held senior communications and public relations positions at the Washington Public Power Supply System (now Energy Northwest) in Richland, and from 1980 to 1987 worked in various public relations and communications positions at Westinghouse Hanford Company in Richland.
Senner served two three-year terms on the Richland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and a one-year term on the Chamber's Executive Board. She was named Richland Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year in 1997. She also has served as chairperson of the Mid-Columbia Division of the March of Dimes Board of Directors, held leadership roles in several March of Dimes volunteer events and projects, chaired the publicity committee for Christ the King School's annual Sausage Fest, completed the Tri-Cities leadership program and directed a 30-member team of community leaders that planned and put on the 1991 Products Industrial Exposition industrial trade show in Pasco.
Senner earned a degree in communications from Washington State University in Pullman in 1980.
Pacific Northwest is one of DOE's nine multiprogram national laboratories and conducts research in the fields of environment, energy, health sciences and national security. The laboratory employs nearly 3,500 staff members and has an annual budget of more than $500 million. In addition to its main Richland complex, Pacific Northwest operates a marine sciences laboratory in Sequim, Wash., and has offices in Portland, Ore.; Seattle and Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington, D.C. Battelle has operated Pacific Northwest for DOE since 1965.
