The house that Battelle built

RICHLAND, Wash. - Battelle will present a check to Habitat for Humanity on Monday, January 11, at 10:30 a.m. in the Battelle Auditorium lobby. Media are invited to attend the ceremony and reception that follows.

Since the Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1994, Battelle employees have been very involved - from pounding nails to serving on the board of directors. Now, Battelle is donating $30,000 to the organization. Thirty-thousand dollars is approximately the amount it takes Habitat for Humanity to build a house for qualified, low-income buyers. The money will be earmarked for a house to be built in Pasco, which will be known as "the Battelle House."

Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity is beginning work on its sixth house. The organization uses volunteer labor and donated supplies to build homes for selected low-income families. The family that will occupy the house must spend 500 hours working on the home and they are eligible to purchase it at a low interest rate. Habitat for Humanity uses those payments to fund additional houses.

More than 100 Battelle employees have volunteered for Habitat building projects in the Tri-County area including the Battelle Woodworkers Club, which will be doing the cabinetry and finish work in the Battelle House as a Team Battelle project. All Battelle volunteers will be honored at the reception.

U.S. Representative Doc Hastings also will be present for the reception and check presentation. Hastings has pledged to participate in Tri-County Partners home building projects in 1999 as part of the national "House that Congress Built" program.
