Pacific Northwest to host forum on Chornobyl
RICHLAND, Wash. -- Tapping into the wealth of knowledge gained from the Hanford cleanup mission is the top priority of a visit to Hanford by Dr. Yuri Kostenko, Minister of Ukraine's Ministry for Environmental Protection & Nuclear Safety.
On Friday, February 7, the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will host Dr. Kostenko as he tours the Hanford Site and meets with officials from DOE, Fluor Daniel Hanford, Bechtel Hanford and the other prime Hanford contractors. Minister Kostenko, who has a critical role in the closure activities for the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, is coming to Hanford to learn more about how Hanford has successfully moved from a production site to a cleanup site.
As part of the visit, Pacific Northwest will host a luncheon for Minister Kostenko on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hanford House in Richland. Luncheon invitees will include the presidents of the Hanford enterprise organizations; Robert M. Rosselli, assistant manager for science and technology managment of DOE-RL; Dr. William J. Madia, director of Pacific Northwest; the mayors of Richland, Kennewick and Pasco and the president of TRIDEC. During the luncheon, Minister Kostenko will give a presentation on the current conditions at Chornobyl and his perspectives on the future of Chornobyl including an overview of Ukraine's activities as Chornobyl moves from production to shutdown.
