DOE selects year's most promising industrial concepts

RICHLAND, WA -- Grants of $22,000 have been awarded through the Department of Energy's Innovative Concepts program to 15 organizations nationwide to support the development of inventive industrial processes.

Awardees receive seed funding, as well as technical and market assistance, to move their concepts closer to the plant managers and engineers who can put them to use. DOE designed the program to support the development of new and improved methods of operation to build our nation's industrial technology base.

This year's competition focused on two technical topics -- the removal of low-to-medium levels of heavy metals from waste streams and the development of lightweight materials for the automotive industry. (A list of grant awardees is attached.) Evaluations are based on technical merit, novelty, commercial potential, work plan, proposer's experience and the cost proposal. Throughout the year, the winning concepts will be presented at technology forums, symposiums and trade shows to facilitate partnerships with investors and program managers who may be interested in commercialization. The next trade show scheduled is the Metallurgy and Exploration Inc., annual meeting and exhibit, March 11-14 at the Civic Plaza Convention Center in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Innovative Concepts program is managed by DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
