COMPREHENSIVE CHERNOBYL DATABASE AIDS RESEARCHERS

RICHLAND, Washington -- The Pacific Northwest Division of Battelle Memorial Institute is marketing a comprehensive bibliographic database on the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

The new software package, called ChernoLit, contains more than 4,500 cited references and abstracts. Yearly updates will keep the program current, and the software is easily installed on an IBM PS/2, AT or fully IBM- compatible PC computer. An Apple Macintosh version will be offered in the future.

Battelle, which operates the Pacific Northwest Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site, Richland, Washington, developed the package as part of the Chernobyl Database Project, which is the official U.S. repository for information related to the nuclear accident. Development of the ChernoLit software was sponsored by DOE's Office of Health and Environmental Research.

Commercialization of the database is part of DOE's technology transfer program; DOE granted commercialization rights to Battelle through the PNL contract. "This is an excellent way to return to taxpayers the benefits of government-sponsored research and development," said Rebecca Kennedy, manager of the Chernobyl Database Project at PNL. "The Chernobyl accident is of great interest to a variety of researchers, and this product will be invaluable to their work," she added.

More information on the product can be obtained by writing to Hal Setzer, Technology Transfer Department, Pacific Northwest Laboratory, P.O. Box 999, MISN K7-02, Richland, Washington, 99352, or calling Setzer at (509) 375-6787.
