The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently selected Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL’s) Yunyang Ye to receive the Homer Addams Award. The award was announced at ASHRAE’s 2022 Annual Conference on June 25 in Toronto.

The honor recognizes a graduate student who has achieved a high standard of performance in an ASHRAE research project at a university that offers graduate programs in the areas of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Ye was cited for his accomplishments at the University of Colorado Boulder, prior to him joining PNNL in 2020.

At the university, his work in building performance standards, which was part of his doctoral dissertation, resulted in a new, novel methodology to create baseline models for existing buildings.

“To assure consistent energy performance evaluation, it is important to reconcile the modeled baselines to empirical baselines so that the predicted energy use intensities align,” Ye said. “The improved methodology accomplishes this and offers a more effective approach for making improvements in buildings to enhance energy efficiency and associated benefits.”

“It was wonderful to receive recognition from ASHRAE. I continue to build upon this work in my research at PNNL,” he noted.

Ye’s research interests span from building energy modeling and building code and standards analyses, to urban-scale modeling, building-to-grid integration, and energy policies.

ASHRAE is an international society with more than 50,000 members that seeks to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. ASHRAE’s efforts focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainability within the industry.
