Crystalline materials are found everywhere, from seashells, teeth, catalysts, semiconductors to batteries. Jinhui Tao, a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Materials Scientist, is the Conference Chair for the 27th American Association for Crystal Growth and Epitaxy Western Section Conference (AACGE West). Tao is one of several PNNL staff involved in the conference. Materials Scientist Chun-Long Chen, Chemist Chinmayee Subban, and PNNL Joint Appointee Jun Liu are all co-chairing sessions at the conference.

Originally scheduled for June 2020, AACGE West-27 will take place from June 12-15, 2022 near Lake Tahoe, California. AACGE West is known for its highly interdisciplinary program that focuses on the fundamental chemistry and physics behind crystal growth. The conference is open to scientists globally but organized by researchers who work in the Western United States.

“We’re excited to bring together materials scientists, chemists, physicists, and anyone else interested in crystal growth,” said Tao. “This conference has been one of my favorites for years and I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to act as chair.”

The conference features three sessions focused on: biological and biomimetic materials, co-chaired by Chen; energy and environmental materials, co-chaired by Subban and Liu; and the fundamentals of crystallization. Each of the three sessions features a mixture of invited and contributed talks together with posters.

“I’m looking forward to meeting with colleagues and discussing their work,” said Chen. The session he is co-chairing focuses on the crystallization of biological/biomimetic materials and self-assembly mechanisms within these systems.

The energy and environmental materials session is new to the conference. It centers on materials with potential applications for energy storage, catalysis, water treatment, and environmental remediation.

“After the pause due to the pandemic, our conference will bring a fabulous platform to share new discoveries, discuss new ideas, and enhance new collaborations among researchers from the crystal growth community and other relevant fields.” said Tao.
