Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) recently worked with Purdue University to host a Cybersecurity Summit for PNNL researchers to find out more about the research at Purdue’s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS).

CERIAS is viewed as one of the world’s leading centers for information security research, which is crucial to the protection of critical computing and communication infrastructure.

“This summit provided an excellent opportunity for our researchers to find highly innovative opportunities for future collaboration between Purdue CERIAS and PNNL,” said Elena Peterson, a senior cybersecurity researcher at PNNL.

CERIAS is unique among national centers because its multidisciplinary approach includes researchers and faculty from six different colleges and 20+ departments across Purdue’s campus.

The summit included presentations by Purdue faculty involved in several key areas in which PNNL is working, including 5G, software supply chain security and transparency, and automated verification for data-intensive applications.

“PNNL got exactly what we were looking for out of the summit,” said Peterson. “We had some really great engagements with the professors at Purdue and will continue to have those engagements in different areas as we move forward. There are a lot of opportunities for us to partner with the university and the students in future.”

Over the summer, Purdue will host a second PNNL summit focusing on data science and machine learning. In addition, PNNL has hired Purdue interns for the summer.

“The two interns working for me are simply outstanding; my PhD student is forging new ground in software security and our undergraduate intern is already helping automate our threat analysis work. Having a pipeline to Purdue would be a great way to keep Purdue talent coming and to hire them full time,” said Chance Younkin, a PNNL cybersecurity engineer, who is working with Elena on the Purdue collaborations.
