Bing Liu, building sector manager and a senior technical advisor at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), was recently named to the Task Force for Building Decarbonization ExCom established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

“The ASHRAE Task Force has put in hard work over the last year,” said Liu. “I appreciate this recognition and the opportunity to continue providing direct input to ASHRAE’s decarbonization strategy as a member of the newly formed and strategically focused ExCom."

Appointment to the ASHRAE Task Force ExCom is a testament to Liu’s internationally recognized expertise and more than 27 years of experience in building codes and standards, large-scale building energy simulation, clean energy technology demonstration and deployment.

The ExCom is already hard at work developing a comprehensive plan for integrating building decarbonization activities into the ASHRAE structure in an expedited fashion. Part of the strategic emphasis for this focused team will be to guide and oversee outreach to amplify ASHRAE’s work, combining building decarbonization resources and aligning initiatives with like-minded organizations to serve as a force multiplier in helping propel buildings nationwide toward a decarbonized future.

“With support from ASHRAE leadership, I am looking forward to implementing ASHRAE’s overall decarbonization efforts," Liu said. "The Task Force will specifically focus on codes, standards, a series of decarbonization-centered design and application guidance, education, training, and workforce development.”

Liu first joined PNNL in 2002 as a program manager and research engineer. Prior to rejoining PNNL in 2021, Liu was a senior leader with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. Today, she oversees PNNL’s building portfolio focused on strategic development and implementation related to building decarbonization and the grid-building intersection, supporting the Department of Energy’s mission and goals. Liu is a registered Professional Engineer and ASHRAE Fellow. She was featured as one of the top 20 women in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry in 2020. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the New Buildings Institute.
