The research portal Research.com recently ranked Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) joint appointee George Karniadakis as one of the best mathematics scientists in the world. The citation-based metrics rated the Brown University professor as #6 in the United States and #9 in the world.

Several of Karniadakis’s publications boast over 1,000 citations, including work on physics-informed neural networks and modeling uncertainty in fluid flows. He was also listed as one of 2022’s Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate Analytics.

At PNNL, Karniadakis leads the Scalable, Efficient and Accelerated Causal Reasoning Operators, Graphs and Spikes for Earth and Embedded Systems (SEA-CROGS) Center. SEA-CROGS was selected for support by the Department of Energy Advanced Scientific Computing Research program as a Mathematical Multifaceted Integrated Capability Center (MMICC) in 2022. The center advances the discoveries made under the Physics-Informed Learning Machines for Multiscale and Multiphysics Problems (PhILMs) Center that Karniadakis also directs.

Karniadakis has held a joint appointment with PNNL since 2013 as part of the Computational Mathematics Group in the Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data division. He received his master’s and PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and naval architecture from the National Technical University of Athens in 1982.
