National Security project manager Jamie Hughes has been selected as a member of the 2020 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Project Leadership Institute (PLI) cohort. Hughes will join 25 colleagues in a year-long program designed to grow leadership skills and foster a culture of project management excellence across the DOE.

“Jamie is a phenomenal project manager,” said Tricia Lewellen, who led the team that unanimously nominated Hughes. “Everything she touches is a success.”

Hughes has been a project manager at PNNL for 11 years, moving between nuclear smuggling detection and deterrence, cybersecurity, acting director of NSD’s Operational Systems and Technology division, and her current project management work for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

“I think that because I was selected in light of my DOD work is indication that project management skills translate across mission focus, multiple sponsors, and mission needs,” said Hughes. “I’m excited to expand upon familiar processes from PNNL and my previous engagement with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to learn more about the priorities for project management across DOE.”

PLI’s transformational professional development experience is simultaneously a leadership development and project delivery course of study and practice tailored to the DOE context. Offering a structured entry into the DOE project leadership community, the PLI program aims for continued networking, peer review, and mentorship after the year-long program.

Beginning next year, Hughes and her cohort will meet for five in-person instructional sessions at national laboratories and universities across the United States with a final session in Washington, DC. Former PNNL participants include Jeff Deal and Angus Bampton.
