Zhenyu (Henry) Huang, electrical engineer and laboratory fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), will lend his time and expertise to an upcoming Elsevier Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems special issue on “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Power and Energy Systems (CMAP).” The international journal’s scope is “focused on electrical power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization, from the viewpoints of individual power system elements and their integration, interaction and technological advancement.” At PNNL, Huang focuses on developing and adapting the latest math, computing, and data analytical techniques to understand and manage the emerging complexity in the power grid and other associate infrastructures.

As guest editor, Huang, in cooperation with the guest editor-in-chief, Dr. Ali Arabnya, PhD in industrial engineering, and the entire guest editorial board, is responsible for inviting and selecting manuscripts for this special edition. They are looking for manuscripts that range from analysis of decarbonization pathways, to system solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation, to technology development for operation and planning of future decarbonized power and energy systems.

Interested parties can find more information about the call for papers and the submission process on the website.

“It’s no secret, our power and energy systems are becoming more dependent on the weather and climate conditions,” said Huang, who cites two recent examples of how weather conditions directly affect how power is generated, delivered, and consumed—the California rolling blackouts in 2020 and the Texas extreme cold storms in 2021. He adds, “it’s important for us to understand how we generate and consume energythese decisions affect everyone. Right now, I believe we have an opportunity to curtail climate change, and I’m honored to be part of this special edition effort in a journal that is highly respected.”

The guest editor-in-chief, Arabnya, further commented, “as citizens of an increasingly interconnected world, we should think globally and act locally to address climate change, the grand challenge of the 21st century. In this special issue we will do our part, however small it may seem, to make a big difference in this global effort to better understand and identify the state-of-the-art solutions for a climate-proof, climate-neutral energy future. We brought together a diverse group of world-class editorial board members aiming to attract world-class scientific contributions from around the globe.”
