Long-awaited six-volume reference covers theory to applications

PNNL researcher Ram Devanathan was part of a team of internationally acclaimed editors that published the 4,900-page second edition of the Handbook of Materials Modeling. He contributed expertise at the intersection of nuclear science, materials science, and multiscale modeling.

“I’ve been studying computational materials science, especially as it pertains to nuclear materials for over 25 years and was able to leverage my professional network for the editing role. The specific focus was on creating an authoritative reference volume for modeling at different scales—from the atomic level, all the way to the engineering scale to understand nuclear materials,” said Devanathan.

The Handbook of Materials Modeling, initially published in 2005, was the first reference work of its kind that provided a comprehensive description of an emerging field of research and helped to grow a community at the intersection of computational science and materials science and technology. The extensively expanded new edition reflects the significant developments in all aspects of computational materials research over the past decade, featuring progress in simulations at multiple scales and materials that have increasing societal importance.

Devanathan edited a 250-page section on modeling nuclear materials and co-authored the section’s introduction. Additionally, he wrote one of the 11 chapters on interatomic potentials for nuclear materials.

“We included experts from all over the world, with broad cross sections of expertise,” said Devanathan. “Our hope is that this will be an enduring source of information for current and future computational scientists.”
